National Curriculum

With changes to curriculum opening up the way for schools to choose which activities will help teach the physical development of children, gymnastics, more than ever, has a firm basis in the school environment.

In Key Stage One, children are required to master basic movements including running, jumping(and other skills) as well as balance, agility and co-ordination- all gymnastics fundamentals.

As children move into Key Stage Two the goals include, linking skills to make actions and sequences of movement- developing flexibility, technique, control, strength and balance- one again gymnastics in a nutshell!

On the whole there is a greater emphasis on physically demanding activities and keeping children physically challenged. Gymnastics is undoubtedly demanding from of physical point of view and with differentiation and progressions all children can be appropriately challenged.

Although gymnastics is not by any means the only way to do this, it is a sport of movement, it can provide a number of activities for children to enjoy and National Curriculum goals can be achieved at the same time.
